Ashen Kestral is the eldest son of the Kestral family, and the latest in a long line of both powerful mages and part-feline folk with unique abilities.  Yet his magic is latent and he has no special skills.

So when he's kidnapped by slavers and sold to the sadistic Lord Morren to have his life-force drained to power the mage lord's spells, Ashen thinks it's for the best. At least here he's useful, and not a disappointment the way he was back home.

A thief's visit by night, however, sets off a series of events that will see Ashen risk his own life to save his fellow slave and fellow latent mage Amelia, with consequences neither he nor his evil master could have foreseen.
